HOW TO USE AMCAT - Copyright (C) 1986 Brian Conrad
Preparing A 'Master Catalog' Disk
---------------------------------
Before running AMCAT, format a blank disk for your Master Catalog Disk.
You may use the whole disk as a Master Catalog Disk or you may set up
subdirectories for catalogs for example: you may have a subdirectory
for PICTURES, another for GAMES, another for BUSINESS, etc.
AMCAT will not write to your Master Catalog if there is less than
50 blocks left free on the disk.
Using AMCAT with a Single Drive
-------------------------------
AMCAT may be used with single drive Amigas. The default setting is
for two drives. To change the setting select Single Drive in the
Preferences section of the AMCAT menu. AMCAT will tell you when to
insert the appropriate disk.
Using AMCAT with Two Drives
---------------------------
AMCAT defaults to two drives. You will be prompted to put your
Master Catalog in the external drive. Disks to be cataloged will
be inserted in the internal drive.
Occasionally when the program needs a printer driver or parallel
driver, you will be requested to insert your Workbench disk.
Cataloging Files
----------------
Cataloging All Files:
AMCAT will only log numeric and alphabetically named files that
are on your disk. This listing is sorted and written to your
Master Catalog. If a disk of the same title has been previously
logged, you may change the name of your disk or cancel logging
that disk.
Cataloging By Directory:
This allows you to catalog only the contents of a specified directory
on your disk. Let's say you have a collection of disks with
Deluxe Paint Pictures , you may create a catalog of 'lo-res' pictures
by entering 'lo-res' in the directory requester.
Cataloging By Pattern:
You may catalog files matching a specific pattern. For instance,
if you are a C programmer you may want a catalog consisting only
of files ending in '.c'. Just enter '*.c' and AMCAT will only
catalog files matching that pattern. See 'Pattern Matching Conventions'
for further details.
Printing Files
--------------
Printing to Screen:
To display the contents of any catalog to the screen, just select
SCREEN when requested. You may cancel the display at any time
by selecting CANCEL.
Printing to Printer:
1. Directing output to PRT:
This uses the printer configuration you have set in Preferences
on your Workbench Disk. The line length should be set to at least
80 characters.
2. Directing output to PAR:
This directs output to the parallel device. This configuration
will allow you to print your Master Catalog even if you do not
have a driver for your parallel printer. Parallel device is
the default setting on AMCAT.
Printing All Files:
This will display all numeric and alphabetically named files to the
selected output device. May be cancelled at any time by selecting
the CANCEL gadget.
Printing Alphabetical Files:
Will only display alphabetically named files to the selected output
device. May be cancelled at any time by selecting the CANCEL gadget.
Printing Files Matching A Pattern:
Will only display files matching a specified pattern to selected
output device. May be cancelled at any time by selecting the CANCEL
gadget. See 'Pattern Matching Conventions' for further details.
Print Disks Logged:
Will display the names of the disks logged to the selected selected
output device. May be cancelled at any time by selecting the CANCEL
gadget.
Pattern Matching Convertions:
AMCAT uses the asterisk '*' and question mark '?' to match patterns.
The asterisk is used to match any number of unspecified characters.
For example: '*.c' will match 'horse.c' but not 'horse.pic' 'c*' will
list all files beginnig with 'c'. The question mark is used to match
any one character in a pattern. For example: 'b?g' will match 'bag',
'big', and 'beg'.
